Exercise M3.07.2 Developing an Evaluation Survey
Develop an evaluation survey for your mentoring programme.
Use the checklist from attached file for useful tips when creating your survey.
Make the questions short and clear, ideally no more than 20 words each. Be sure to give the respondents all the information they will need to answer the questions (e.g., select the best answer, select all the options that apply).
- Start with questions that are not personal and fairly easy to answer.
- Avoid questions that have more than one central idea or theme (sometimes referred to as “double-barrelled” questions). Example of a double-barrelled question:
- Did the mentor training programme increase your knowledge about the mentoring programme and did you gain a greater understanding of what is expected of you in your role as a mentor?
This question contains two ideas; the training programme may have increased awareness of the mentoring programme, but not provided additional clarity on the role of the mentor.
- Did the mentor training programme increase your knowledge about the mentoring programme and did you gain a greater understanding of what is expected of you in your role as a mentor?
- Keep language simple and avoid jargon.
- Avoid words that are open to interpretation (e.g., “generally,” “usually,” “average,” “typically,” “often” and “rarely”).
